"I immediately fell in love with this unusual hand cut Australian sapphire when I discovered it in a private collection, where it had been held since it was purchased directly from a gem fossicker in the 1970s. I designed the open side panels of the setting to reveal the subtle layers of natural colour banding. The asymmetric arrangement reminds me of a fossicker's loose stones; the angle of the sapphire on the band a compass point, leading him home."
