Pieces of Eight: The Week Before Christmas

As the third week of December unfolds, the countdown to Christmas is well underway. With the holiday season in full swing, it's time to complete the preparations and immerse ourselves in the magic of this time of year. At Pieces of Eight we're here to assist you to find the kind of gifts that will not only bring joy and delight but also serve as enduring symbols of your love and affection.
This summer we're looking forward to visiting NGV Melbourne’s highly anticipated Yayoi Kusama exhibition. Our Royal Arcade Gallery’s festive window pays homage to this extraordinary artist, showcasing her signature polka dots, and stainless steel spheres to highlight our selections of exquisite and collectable pieces of jewellery and objet d’art, handcrafted by our talented artists.

We asked our artists what they love most about this time of year, read on for their response.

I love the rhythm of the year, with its special moments and milestones, and by December, I’m ready for a reset. Summer arrives like a gift—the ocean calls, the days stretch long, and there’s time for good books, late dinners, and making memories with loved ones. It’s the perfect pause before the year gets rolling again.

I love that dreamy time between boxing day and New Years Eve when everyone clears out of the city. Inner city Melbourne becomes like a sleepy holiday town, super laid back and easy to get around.

Suzi Zutic
I enjoy going into the city this time of year because it's always very festive. I know some people find it overwhelming but I love the energy. The street decorations, and beautiful retail window displays, all have a lovely Christmas feel.

I really love the family traditions around this time of year. Culture and heritage shine through; we eat special (and delicious!) foods, many of which are unique to the Christmas celebration. It’s a nice time to relax & reflect with friends - feeling thankful for the year that’s been, and hopeful for the one about to begin.

I really love the warm weather and long days, and the general holiday slow time feeling. Probably my favourite week of the whole year is from December 26 - Jan 1 where you just lose track of what day it is.
