LISA ROET: AN INTERVIEW & INSTALLATION
The team at Pieces of Eight were delighted to welcome Lisa Roet last week to install an incredible showcase of her works. From eclectic cocktail jewellery and wearable sculpture to her stunning Simian bronze works that range from the size of a chimp finger to full-sized snow monkeys.
PO8: Lisa, tell us about your year. What have been the highlights of 2024?
LR: This year's highlights include a large-scale environmental project for Sydney Contemporary, featuring a 20-meter sculpture atop Carriageworks with a soundtrack of the male gibbon's love call. This touring artwork raises awareness about urbanisations impact on biodiversity.
PO8: Your pair of bronze snow monkeys residing in our Royal Arcade window are attracting many admirers; can you discuss their creation and unique colour?
LR: The monkeys are investment-cast bronze with a red enamel patina. This colour reflects the monkeys' appearance after hours in hot mineral baths near Tokyo. Titled "Brothers Keepers," they symbolise forest protectors, with the sculptures capturing moments of self-reflection and awareness.
PO8: We're happy to have copies of 'I Am Ape' available. How did you find the publishing process?
LR: The process was challenging, as we had to compile information from my past projects. The controversial cover, which I call my anti-botox portrait, came from a discussion about the chimpanzee busts I create as self-portraits.
PO8: Your jewellery pieces are incredibly unique. Can you describe your creation process, from inspiration to completion?
LR: My jewellery is part of my art practice, using research materials from my archives. I've incorporated skin textures and handprints from historical specimens, creating rings, bangles, and more. Wearing these pieces serves as a reminder of our place in nature and the human attraction to gold, colours, and stones.
